The Qurʾān's verb for creating is khalaqa, and it runs 184 times — more than any other form of its root. But the same three letters خ-ل-ق also give خُلُق, khuluq: a person's character, the shape of who they are. That word occurs twice, and one of the two is the verse about the Prophet — «indeed you are of a great khuluq» 68:4. One root, then, for the making of a world and the making of a self. This page follows the creating: what the Qurʾān says was made, in what order, out of what — and where it stops short of the account a modern reader expects.
The first word revealed was about creation
interpreted· quran by quranCounted: by the traditional chronology, sūra 96 is the first revelation, and its opening two verses carry the root twice. Read: that the placement is significant is the reading.
ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ
Recite in the name of your Lord who created -
The command is «read» — and the very first attribute given to God in the revelation is alladhī khalaq, «who created».
خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ
Created man from a clinging substance.
Then the specific: «created the human from a clinging clot». The Qurʾān's opening argument is not a doctrine but an origin.
One root, eight lives — creation and character
countedAll 261 occurrences of خ-ل-ق, split by derived form (QAC morphology); the eight branches sum to the full 261.
One root, several lives
created — and the subject of this verb is almost always God — in the text
2:21يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -
«worship your Lord, who created you and those before you» — the creating is given as the reason for the worship.
The counts and the forms are counted, and the eight branches sum to all 261. That khalq and khuluq being one root means something — that character is a kind of shaping — is what the lexicographers heard in it, and a reading, not a measurement.

The Qurʾān says the heavens and earth were made «in six days». How long is one of those days, by the Qurʾān's own account?
What the Qurʾān says things were made from
interpreted· quran by quranEach material is named by the verse it carries. The grouping is the reading — and note that the Qurʾān gives different substances for the human in different places without harmonising them.
The human
الإنسانSeveral substances, given in different passages, never reconciled into one sequence by the text itself.
«I am going to create a human being from clay» 38:76, and «He began the creation of man from clay» 32:7.
«from clay of altered black mud» 15:28 — a more specific, stranger material.
The living
الأحياءOne statement covers everything alive, and one covers the varieties.
The phrase occurs once in the Qurʾān 21:30, inside the same verse as the splitting apart of the heavens and earth.
The unseen
الغيبThe Qurʾān names materials for beings it does not otherwise describe.
«And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire» 55:15.
What surrounds «Be — and it is»
interpreted· quran by quranKun fa-yakūn is quoted as a statement about God's power in the abstract. In the text it is almost always answering a specific objection.
- Before2:116
Someone has just said God has a son
In 2:116 the claim is made that God has taken a son. The formula arrives as a rebuttal, not as a cosmology lesson.
- The mention2:117
«He only says to it: Be — and it is»
«Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is» 2:117. The point is that One who creates by command has no need of offspring.
- After3:47
And the same words answer a virgin birth
The formula's other famous use is Maryam's question — «how can I have a child when no man has touched me?» — answered with the identical clause 3:47. The Qurʾān uses it wherever a listener says «that cannot happen».
«Six days» — is the Qurʾān describing a duration at all?
interpreted· quran by quranThe text gives a number and withholds a scale. Readers have taken that two ways for as long as there has been tafsīr.
If the Qurʾān says creation took «six days» 7:54 but elsewhere calls a day a thousand years 22:47 and fifty thousand 70:4, is yawm here a period of time, or a stage of an order?
Reading ASix periods — long, unmeasured stretches
ستة أطوارYawm means a span whose length is set by its context, and the Qurʾān supplies spans of wildly different sizes on purpose. Six «days» are six epochs, and the text deliberately declines to say how long.
- The Qurʾān itself supplies two different day-lengths — 22:47 and 70:4 — with no attempt to reconcile them, which suggests yawm is elastic by design.
- 41:9–41:12 lays the creation out in stages with their own sub-counts, reading more like an ordered sequence than a week.
- Weakness a fair reading must state: it can slide into fitting the verse to whatever cosmology is current — which the Qurʾān never asks for.
Reading BSix days — and the number is not the point
العدد ليس المقصودThe clause is not an account of duration at all. Every occurrence of «six days» is followed immediately by then He established Himself upon the Throne — the sentence is about sovereignty, and the six is scene-setting for that.
- The pattern is consistent: in 7:54, 10:3, 32:4 and 57:4 the six days lead straight into the establishing upon the Throne. The clause never stands alone.
- Reading it as a measurement asks the verse a question its own sentence is not asking.
- Weakness a fair reading must state: the text did choose to say six, and a reading that makes the number weightless has to explain why it is there.
The atlas records the fork — it crowns no reading.
It is worth naming what the Qurʾān does not do here. It gives no date, no age of the earth, no order of the six days, and no reconciliation of the clay with the clot. It says «every living thing» came from water 21:30 and moves on. Where a reader expects an account, the text keeps turning the subject back into an argument: creation is offered as a sign — «in the creation of the heavens and the earth… are signs for those of understanding» 3:190 — and signs are for reading, not for dating. That restraint cuts both ways, and it is why this atlas will not mine these verses for scientific predictions. A text that declined to specify is not improved by our specifying on its behalf.
What the Qurʾān builds on the fact of creation
interpreted· quran by quranEach outcome is stated by the verse it carries; the arrangement is the reading.
«Your Lord, who created you»
The premise the Qurʾān returns to before almost every demand it makes 2:21.
Therefore: worship
2:21«worship your Lord, who created you» — the creating is given as the ground of the command 2:21.
Therefore: resurrection is not absurd
36:81The argument the Qurʾān makes most often from creation: One who made it once can do it again 36:81.
Therefore: your differences are a sign, not a ranking
30:22«among His signs is the creation of the heavens and earth, and the diversity of your tongues and colours» 30:22.
Therefore: purpose
51:56«I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me» 51:56 — the one verse that states creation's aim outright.
And: it was not made in play
21:16«We did not create the heaven and earth and what is between them in play» 21:16 — the possibility is raised in order to be denied.
Creation, in the Qurʾān's own words
countedA curated set — the verses this page rests on, gathered. Every one is byte-exact from the corpus.
أَوَلَمْ يَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَٰهُمَا وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ حَىٍّ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?
The splitting apart, and every living thing from water — in one verse.
بَدِيعُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمْرًا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ
Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.
«Be — and it is.»
Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.
The stage-list, ending in a phrase used once in the Qurʾān: «the best of creators».
فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَٰجِدِينَ
And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."
The material account ends in something immaterial.
وَمِنْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ خَلْقُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱخْتِلَٰفُ أَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَأَلْوَٰنِكُمْ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَٰتٍ لِّلْعَٰلِمِينَ
And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge.
Difference of tongue and colour, named as a sign.
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
The stated purpose.
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
The other khuluq — creation turned into character.
إِنَّ فِى خَلْقِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱخْتِلَٰفِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ لَـَٔايَٰتٍ لِّأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَٰبِ
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
Creation as evidence, addressed to «those of understanding».
The web creation sits in
interpreted· quran by quranThe neighbours are those the Qurʾān argues from creation to — the sign, the resurrection, the worship it grounds — plus the character that shares its root.
A sign, not a record
interpreted· quran by quranThe counts on this page are honest and small: the root runs 261 times, «six days» seven, «Be — and it is» eight, and the word for character twice. What none of it settles is the thing readers most often bring to these verses — how, and how long ago. The Qurʾān seems uninterested in the question. It gives clay in one place and a clot in another, a number of days without a scale, and then turns, again and again, to the same move: look at it. «In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, are signs for those of understanding» 3:190 — and the verse immediately after describes those people not as calculating but as standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, reflecting 3:191. That is the posture the text asks for. A map can count the words; it cannot do the looking.
