A theme in the Qurʾān

الآخرة

Al-Ākhira

The Hereafter is the Qur'ān's constant horizon: the reckoning that gives this life its weight. It is set against the 'nearer life' (al-dunyā) not as its enemy but as its measure — better, more lasting, and the standard by which present choices are priced.

The two lives

interpreted· quran by quran

The Qur'ān's governing comparison — not world-denial but re-weighting.

Al-Ākhira

الآخرة

The lasting life, the true home.

  • Better and more lasting (87:17)
  • The home of permanence (40:39)
  • Where the deed is finally weighed

Al-Dunyā

الدنيا

The nearer life — real, but lesser and passing.

  • Play and amusement, if made an end (29:64)
  • A brief enjoyment (3:185)
  • To be spent buying the lasting home (28:77)

The scene of the reckoning

interpreted· quran by quran

Sūrat al-Zalzala renders judgment as exact weighing.

  1. The upheaval99:7

The earth gives up its news

The ground testifies; nothing done upon it is lost. The setting of judgment is the world itself, returned as witness.

  2. The measure99:7

    An atom's weight

'Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it.' The scale is absurdly fine — no deed too small to register.

  3. The symmetry99:8

    Good and evil, both

'And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.' The same exactness cuts both ways — the Hereafter is precise, not sentimental.

Weigh a deed

interpreted

An illustration of 99:7-8's principle, not a doctrine of exact tallies.

The Qur'ān's scale is fine to an atom's weight — nothing is too small to register, and it cuts both ways. What it weighs is beyond any tally here; the balance only pictures the principle, it does not price a soul.

What orienting to the Hereafter changes

  • Deeds sent ahead, found waiting
