The request and the answer

ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
Guide us to the straight path -
The whole prayer of the opening sūrah reduces to one plea: «guide us to the straight path».
ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah -
The next sūrah's answer: «this is the Book… a guidance (hudā) for the God-conscious».

The Fātiḥa ends naming two groups who are not on the straight path. One is «those who earned anger». Who is the other?
The two guidances
interpreted· narrationA classical distinction (developed at length in al-Mīzān): hidāyat al-irshād — showing the way — which the Prophet gives; and hidāyat al-tawfīq — granting arrival — which is God's alone. The two verses look contradictory and are not.
إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِى مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
«You do not guide whom you love» — the Prophet cannot grant arrival, even to those dearest to him.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ رُوحًا مِّنْ أَمْرِنَا مَا كُنتَ تَدْرِى مَا ٱلْكِتَٰبُ وَلَا ٱلْإِيمَٰنُ وَلَٰكِن جَعَلْنَٰهُ نُورًا نَّهْدِى بِهِۦ مَن نَّشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهْدِىٓ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
And thus We have revealed to you an inspiration of Our command. You did not know what is the Book or [what is] faith, but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, [O Muhammad], you guide to a straight path -
«And indeed you guide to a straight path» — yet he does show the way. Two verbs, two guidances, no contradiction.

Guidance as a road, not a verdict
interpreted· quran by quranThe verb hadā keeps company with ṣirāṭ (path) and sabīl (way) — 24 and 29 co-mentions. Guidance in the Qurʾān is spatial: a road walked, not a badge held.

Every creature is «guided»
«Our Lord is He who gave each thing its form, then guided it» — thumma hadā. The first guidance is built into creation: each thing shown the way of its own nature.

Guidance and straying

Hudā
الهدىThe straight path — a road God shows, the breast opened to walk it, guidance that grows underfoot.

Creational guidance — every thing to its nature
الهداية التكوينية«He gave each thing its form, then guided it» (20:50): the bee to its comb, each creature to its way. Guidance built into being.
Guidance of showing — the messenger's task
هداية الإرشاد«You guide to a straight path» (42:52): the two roads pointed out (90:10), the way made plain. Offered to all; this is what a prophet can give.
Guidance of arrival — God's alone
هداية التوفيق«You do not guide whom you love, but God guides whom He wills» (28:56): the breast actually opened, the goal actually reached.
Guidance across the Qurʾān

إِنَّا هَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا
Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.

إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِى مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ

وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱهْتَدَوْا۟ زَادَهُمْ هُدًى وَءَاتَىٰهُمْ تَقْوَىٰهُمْ
And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness.
«Those who are guided — He increases them in guidance.»
