A theme in the Qurʾān

العلم

Al-ʿIlm

The root ʿ-l-m is the second-most frequent idea-root in the Qurʾān after God Himself — 854 occurrences. But count the forms and the theme turns: the verb ʿalima (to know) and the name al-ʿAlīm (the All-Knowing) dominate, while ʿilm as a thing a human possesses appears only a hundred times. Knowledge, in the Qurʾān, is first God's; the human share is taught — «He taught man what he did not know» — and its measure is not information but the awe it produces.

The first thing revealed

interpreted· quran by quran

By the traditional chronology, Sūrat al-ʿAlaq is the first revelation — and it opens on reading, the pen, and teaching.

Adam's rank over the angels is not native genius but names God taught him — and the angels answer with the theme's thesis.

«Are those who know equal to those who do not?»

interpreted· quran by quran

39:9 frames its famous question with worship, not the lecture-hall — the knower it praises is the one who prays through the night.

  1. Before39:9

The one who stands in the night

The verse first pictures a person «devoutly obedient through the night, prostrating and standing, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for his Lord's mercy». The knower is drawn as a worshipper before he is drawn as a scholar.

  2. The mention39:9

«Say: are those who know equal to those who do not know?»

hal yastawī alladhīna yaʿlamūna wa alladhīna lā yaʿlamūn. The question is rhetorical — and the ʿilm it means is the knowledge that produced the night-vigil just described.

  3. After39:9

«Only people of understanding take heed»

innamā yatadhakkaru ulū al-albāb. Knowledge culminates not in more data but in tadhakkur — being reminded, turning inward. Knowing, here, is a road to remembrance.

What knowledge leads to

interpreted· quran by quran

The Qurʾān attaches concrete consequences to knowledge — awe, rank, and the humbling awareness that someone always knows more.

Those given knowledge

58:11

  • Awe of God — «only the knowing truly fear Him»

    35:28

    innamā yakhshā Allāha … al-ʿulamāʾ

  • Raised in rank «by degrees»

    58:11

    yarfaʿ Allāhu … darajāt

  • Kept humble — «above every knower is one more knowing»

    12:76

    fawqa kulli dhī ʿilmin ʿalīm

Knowledge and its opposite

interpreted· quran by quran

The Qurʾānic antonym of ʿilm is often not simple ignorance of facts but jahl — a moral condition: rashness, arrogance, and wrongdoing «out of ignorance». The two roots meet in one āya only 7 times.

ʿIlm

العلم

Knowledge that begins as gift, ripens into awe, and keeps its holder humble.

  • Its first fruit is fear of God, not pride (35:28)
  • It raises a person «by degrees» (58:11)
  • The prayer «my Lord, increase me in knowledge» (20:114)

Jahl

الجهل

Not merely not-knowing, but the reckless, arrogant temper the Qurʾān calls jāhiliyya — and it names wrongdoing done «out of ignorance».

  • Wrong «done out of ignorance», then repented (6:54)
  • Joseph's brothers acted «when you were ignorant» (12:89)
  • The command «turn away from the ignorant» (7:199)

Three orders of knowing

interpreted· quran by quran

A distinction the text itself draws — between what God alone knows, what He teaches, and what humans acquire.

The unseen — God's alone

علم الغيب

«With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them but He» — not a leaf falls without His knowing it.

6:59

Taught knowledge — the prophetic gift

التعليم الإلهي

The names taught to Adam, the pen, «He taught man what he did not know». Revelation is knowledge God hands down.

2:3196:5

Acquired knowledge — the human task

طلب العلم

What a person seeks and grows in — «my Lord, increase me in knowledge» — always a subset under «one more knowing».

And among people and moving creatures and grazing livestock are various colors similarly. Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving.

«Only those of His servants who have knowledge fear God.»

O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, "Arise," then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

God raises the believers and «those given knowledge» by degrees.

So high [above all] is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth. And, [O Muhammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur'an before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."

«My Lord, increase me in knowledge» — the one thing the Prophet is told to ask more of.

So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion of the king except that Allah willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.

«Above every possessor of knowledge is one more knowing.»

And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.
