A theme in the Qurʾān

Taqwā

Taqwā is a protective God-awareness — from a root meaning 'to shield'. The Qur'ān makes it the true index of human worth, the condition for guidance from the Book, and the opener of unexpected provision and clear judgment.

The measure of nobility

interpreted· quran by quran

Taqwā, not lineage, is the Qur'ān's criterion of rank.

How the Book opens with it

interpreted· quran by quran

Al-Baqara sets taqwā as the precondition of guidance in its first lines.

  1. Before2:2

    A Book beyond doubt

'This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance…' — but the guidance is immediately conditioned.

  2. The mention2:2

    …for those of taqwā

hudan li-l-muttaqīn. The Qur'ān guides the already-oriented; taqwā is the eye that lets the light in, not a reward that follows reading.

  3. After2:3

    Who they are

They are then defined by action: belief in the unseen, prayer, and — first among deeds named — spending from what We have provided. Taqwā is cashed out as conduct.

What God-consciousness opens

interpreted· quran by quran

Sūrat al-Ṭalāq attaches concrete outcomes to taqwā.

Whoever is conscious of God

65:2

  • He makes a way out

    65:2

    min ḥaythu lā yaḥtasib

  • Provision from where none is expected

    65:3
  • A criterion to discern right from wrong

Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do - Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah. And fear Me, O you of understanding.

The best provision is taqwā.

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

Fear God as He should be feared.

And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous

A garden prepared for the God-conscious.

O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.

The garment of taqwā is best.

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

Let every soul look to what it sends ahead.

The soul and its fujūr and its taqwā.
