«Establish prayer for My remembrance»
interpreted· quran by quranGod's first words to Moses at the fire name prayer — and name its purpose 20:14.
إِنَّنِىٓ أَنَا ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنَا۠ فَٱعْبُدْنِى وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكْرِىٓ
Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.
The purpose clause the whole subject turns on: prayer is li-dhikrī, «for My remembrance». The rite exists for the relationship.
ٱتْلُ مَآ أُوحِىَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْفَحْشَآءِ وَٱلْمُنكَرِ وَلَذِكْرُ ٱللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ
Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.
And its social effect: «prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing» — a practice meant to reshape conduct, not only fill time.
A thing established, not an act performed
interpreted· quran by quranA pattern the form-split makes visible.
Of the 99 occurrences, the noun ṣalāh dominates — 83 times — while the verb ṣallā, «he prayed», appears only 12. And the verb the Qurʾān pairs with the noun is almost always aqāma, «to establish, set upright», not merely «to do». You do not simply pray the ṣalāh; you establish it — make it stand as a fixed institution in a life and a community. This is why the command reads aqīmū'l-ṣalāh and never a bare «pray»: the Qurʾān is legislating a standing pillar, not describing a passing act.

The prayer that is never alone
interpreted· quran by quranIn 28 verses ṣalāh and zakāh appear together. The pattern is so fixed the tradition reads it as a single command with two faces: duty to God, duty to people.
Ṣalāh — turning to God
الصَّلاةThe vertical bond: the servant standing before the Lord.
Zakāh — turning to people
الزَّكاةThe horizontal bond: wealth purified by giving. Not the opposite of prayer but its constant partner.
- «…and give zakāh» — the clause that shadows almost every command to pray 2:43.
- The pairing frames the whole life of faith: «who believe, do good, establish prayer, give zakāh» 2:277.
- The root z-k-w means to purify, to grow — the same word behind «he has succeeded who purifies himself, and prays» 87:14.
One question
interpreted· quran by quranTest your reading
When God first commands prayer to Moses in 20:14, He gives a reason. What is it?
The prayer marked out in time
interpreted· quran by quranThe Qurʾān fixes prayer to «specified times» 4:103 and names the marker-moments, though the number of daily prayers is drawn from the Prophet's practice, not counted in the text.
«Appointed times» (*mawqūt*)
كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا«Prayer is decreed upon the believers at specified times» — timing is of its essence 4:103.
The two ends of the day
طَرَفَيِ ٱلنَّهَارِ«Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and the approach of the night» 11:114.
From noon's decline to night
دُلُوكِ ٱلشَّمْسِ«…until the darkness of night, and the recitation of dawn» 17:78 — the day's arc marked by prayer.
The middle prayer
ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ٱلْوُسْطَىٰ«Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer» 2:238 — singled out for care, its identity itself debated.
When God «prays» — same word, whose act?
interpreted· quran by quranThe root ṣ-l-w is predicated of God and the angels as well as of humans 33:56. What does the one word mean across so wide a range?
In 33:56, «God and His angels yuṣallūna upon the Prophet.» It is the same root as human ṣalāh — so what does ṣalāh mean at its root?
Reading AOne meaning: turning-toward / connection
معنى واحدThe root names a turning toward: from a servant it is worship; from the angels, intercession; from God, mercy and blessing. One relation, read up or down the ladder of being — which is why a single word carries all three.
- The lexicographers derive it from ṣila, connection — ṣalāh as the bond itself.
- Human prayer and divine blessing are then two directions of one turning-toward.
Reading BDistinct meanings sharing a form
اشتراك لفظيThe word is homonymous: from humans ṣalāh is the specific ritual with its bowing and words; from God it is raḥma, mercy; from angels, istighfār, seeking forgiveness. The tafsīrs gloss 33:56 precisely because the ritual sense cannot be meant of God.
- Classical exegesis explains yuṣallī of God as «bestows mercy», of angels as «pray for forgiveness».
- The shared root need not mean a shared act — only a family resemblance.
The atlas records the fork — it crowns no reading.
Prayer kept, prayer neglected
interpreted· quran by quranThe Qurʾān frames both the guarding of prayer and its heedless performance.
Al-Ṣalāh
«establish the prayer» [[2:43]]
The believers succeed
23:2«successful are the believers, humbly submissive in their prayer… who guard their prayers» [[23:1]], [[23:9]]
Restrained from wrong
29:45«prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing» [[29:45]]
Purification and success
87:15«he has succeeded who purifies himself and prays» [[87:14]]
Woe to the heedless
107:5the warning is not against *not praying* but against praying while «heedless of their prayer» [[107:4]], [[107:5]]
The prayer in the believers' portrait
interpreted· quran by quranHow the Qurʾān places prayer inside a life.
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى صَلَاتِهِمْ خَٰشِعُونَ
They who are during their prayer humbly submissive
The first mark of the successful believer: khushūʿ, humble stillness, in prayer.
فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ
So woe to those who pray
The warning turns on the heart, not the act: «woe to those who pray…»
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ
[But] who are heedless of their prayer -
«…who are heedless of their prayer» — presence, not mere performance, is asked.
حَٰفِظُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلصَّلَوَٰتِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ٱلْوُسْطَىٰ وَقُومُوا۟ لِلَّهِ قَٰنِتِينَ
Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient.
«Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before God devoutly.»
And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.
Prayer «decreed at specified times» — the timing is part of the command.
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
Even trade yields to it: «leave off trade» at the Friday call.
The web ṣalāh sits in
interpreted· quran by quranPrayer's stated purpose is remembrance; its constant partner is zakāh; its ground is oneness; its effect, restraint from wrong.
The rite the text leaves half-drawn
interpreted· quran by quranIt is a strange thing that the book which commands prayer a hundred times never quite teaches it — no rakʿa counted, no words fixed in the text. The Qurʾān legislates the standing of prayer and leaves the shape of it to the one who prayed it best. What it will not leave vague is the point: not the posture but the presence, «for My remembrance» 20:14; and the warning it saves is not for those who miss prayer but for those who keep it «heedless» 107:5. Where the text stays open — the number of daily prayers, the identity of the «middle prayer» — is exactly where the community's living practice, not the page, has the last word.
