And there were in the city nine family heads causing corruption in the land and not amending [its affairs].

نه گروهک مفسد

شهری که این آیه به آن اشاره دارد»ء «حجر» است. این شهر بین شام و حجاز در سرزمینی به نام «وادی‌القری» که قوم نمود در آنجا بودند. قرار داشت. در این شهرء نه گروهک مفسد قرار داشتند که با هم تبانی کردند شبانه بر صالح و خانواده‌اش پورش ببرند و آنها رابه هلاکت برسانند و نزد ولی دم اوء از قتل صالح اظهار بی‌اطلاعی کنند. شبیه این نقشه را مشرکان عصر پیامبر(ص) هم طراحی کردند. آنها تصمیم داشتند پیامبر(ص) را از میان بر دارند؛ اما در بارة چگونگی اجرای این تصمیم با هم اختلاف داشتند که ناکهان شیطان به صورت بیر مردی به مجلس انها وارد شد و پیشنهاد کرد که چهل نفر از چهل قبیله جمع شوند و در نیمه شب به خانةٌ پیامبر خدا حمله برند و او را از پا در آورند. بدین ترتیب» خون پیامبر در میان چهل نفر پخش شده» لوث گردد و اولیای خون اوء به گرفتن خونبها راضی شوند. الیته با مداد الهی و جانفشانی امیرالموّمنین علی(ع) نقشة آنها نقش بر آب شد (ر.ک. به: بقره - ۲۰۷). برخی از مفسران گفته‌اند که آن نه گروهک که قصد کشتن صالح را داشتندء با سنگ هایی از طرف فرشتگان نابود شدند. برخی دیگر نیز گفته‌اند که صالح مأْمور شد به طوری که کسی نفهمد. از میان آنها بیرون رود؛ سپس خدا عذاب خود را بر آنها فرو فرستاد و آنها را هلاک کرد. برخی دیگر نیز گفته‌اند که آنها به دامنة کوهی رفتند و به انتظار صالح نشستند که ناگاه کوه بر سر آنها ریخت و آنها را از میان برد.
