And when one of them is informed of [the birth of] a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.

زنده به گور کردن دختران

در بارة مشرکانی که رسم جاهلانه و ضد انسانی زنده به گور کردن دختران در میانشان مرسوم بودء گفته‌اند که پیش از زایمان همسرشان» گودال کوچکی می‌کندند و اگر نوزاد دختر بودء او را در آن گودال می‌گذاشتند و روی آن خاک می‌ریختند تا بمیرد. علت این کار» ترس از فقر بود؛ زیرا پسران کار می‌کردند و تولیدکننده بودند؛ ولی دختران فقط مصرف‌کننده بودند. نیز گفته‌اند که این جنایت از قبیلة «بنی‌تمیم» آغاز شد؛ بدین صورت که آنها در جنگی که با کسرای ایران داشتند»ء شکست خوردند و زنان و فرزندانشان اسیر لشکر کسری شدند و آنان را به اسیری به دربار کسری بردند. در آنجا دختران را به کنیزی نگه داشتند و پس از مدتی که میان دو طرف صلح شدء بنی‌تمیم تقاضای بازگشت اسیرانشان را کرد. دربار کسری, اسیران را بین ماندن در دربار و بازگشت مخیر کرد و عده‌ای از دختران» ماندن را ترجیح دادند. مردان بنی‌تمیم از این موضوع خشمگین شدند و تصمیم گرفتند که از آن پس نوزادان دختر را زنده به گور کنند تا مبادا به دست دشمن بیفتند و آنها سرشکسته گردند. سپس بعضی دیگر از قبایل, از آنها تقلید کردند و این رسم در میان آنها نیز شایع شد.
